1928 King George V Gold South African Sovereign Information
As a way of identifying the mint locations of sovereigns, international mints mark their sovereigns with a letter signifying the manufacturer of origin.
This 1928 7.988g Sovereign coin is struck from 22 carat gold and is legal British tender but the coin's South African origin is marked by the ‘SA’ stamped on the reverse of the coin, placed above the date.
Sovereigns were issued from the South African Mint from 1923, following the resolution of the Boer War, when the British Military occupied South Africa and British currency was regarded as legal tender.
Some of these coins are vintage and may show signs of a long life that add to their character.
