1870 Australian Gold Sovereign Information
This 7.988g Sovereign coin is struck from 22-carat gold and the dimensions are identical to that of the standard British Gold Sovereign.
The 1850s gold rush was a significant event in Australian history which forever changed the political and economic development of the country, it encouraged mass immigration, government spending and colony relations. It was decided that rather than shipping the gold to London to be minted, it was more efficient to refine the organic gold into coins in Australia.
The Sydney Sovereign is regarded as Australia’s first gold sovereign and initially was only deemed as legal tender in the New South Wales colony. After its surge in popularity, the sovereign was then adopted by the other colonies to eventually be held abroad in countries such as Britain, Hong Kong and India.
The design attributed to the Sovereigns prior to the year 1870 was specific to the Sydney Mint, however, in 1871 the British Government revoked the approval of the Sydney Mint design and Australian sovereigns were modified with a quintessential British flair to them.
The obverse depicts a portrait of a young Queen Victoria and the year of the coinage and the reverse shows a crowned wreath and the inscription ‘AUSTRALIA’, ‘SYDNEY MINT’ and ‘ONE SOVEREIGN’.
Some of these coins are vintage and may show signs of a long life that add to their character.
